Montreal Food Waste Regulation – Prototypes in Progress

RCC recently participated in workshops on upcoming food waste rules, led by the City of Montreal and the Maison de l’innovation sociale. Two draft regulations are currently in development: one requiring the sorting and internal tracking of unsold food, and the other mandating the annual reporting of discarded food volumes. RCC stressed the importance of minimizing red tape, clearly and fairly defining which businesses are covered, and recognizing existing practices. A voluntary pilot phase is expected this summer. Draft regulations will be refined and shared with stakeholders and elected officials by mid-fall, ahead of any formal implementation process.
